2012 £5 Crown

Four commemorative crowns were issued in 2012. The last of the ‘countdown’ series of coins, one to mark the 2012 London Olympics, another to mark the Paralympics and another to mark the diamond jubilee of the Queen’s accession to the throne.

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by Claire Aldridge and features three rejoicing robot-looking people. This coin is the last of the countdown to the Olympics series.

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by Siaman Miah and shows a view of London within a circle, surrounded by sporting logos and the London 2012 logo.

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by Pippa Sanderson, marks the Paralympics and shows spokes of a wheel, part of a clock and what I think is some kind of target and a section of stopwatch, all incorporated into a clock-face.

The story behind the design:

The obverse by Ian Rank-Broadley shows a larger full shoulder length bust of the Queen. The reverse for this Diamond jubilee crown is also my Mr Rank-Broadley and features a much younger Queen, very much in the style of the original Mary Gillick portrait which was used on UK coins from 1953 to 1967 (and for the 1970 proofs).
